Living for Living Water
John 4:7-14 NIV
When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?” Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
Hummingbirds are such interesting creatures. We moved into a new house last year and I had noticed we had quite a large hummingbird population flitting about. This last spring I set out a hummingbird feeder, expecting the masses to well… mass.
It took awhile. In fact, it took all summer for the little guys to find the food. But once they did, it quickly became a popular spot. I love going out to our porch and watching them buzz around and feed. They are magical little creatures- what colors! What personalities! What metabolisms!
Hummingbirds tiny bodies are what are truly fascinate me. Their wings can beat up to an astounding 5400 times per MINUTE. With such high energy needs, they must consume their body-weight in nectar daily to keep up. Suffice it to say, food becomes high priority…. in fact, it’s the highest priority for them to survive. Their lives revolve totally around finding and eating food.
Yet, simply FINDING the location of the nectar doesn’t actually get it into their bodies, does it? These little creatures must still daily, hourly, minute-to-minute be in search for and intaking from this nectar that keeps them going.
Being a hummingbird must be hard. It’s a constant flurry of finding and drinking their ‘water of life’. It’s not too much of a stretch to say their lives depend on them intentionally and actively getting the nectar into their bodies.
Is Christianity not the same?
We are actively dying daily without the Living Water of Christ. We need Water that is eternal and forever satisfying. There is such water! As Jesus said to the woman at the well, “everyone who drinks this water will never thirst again.” We have the Source dear ones! A source that is replenished and unending! What a find! Through Jesus we have the ultimate feeder for our souls.
And yet, like the hummingbirds, our spiritual lives are dependent on tapping into that feeder, actually CONSUMING the Water. Simply knowing that it’s there, where it’s located isn’t enough. We need to partake daily, hourly, sometimes minute-by-minute of it’s sustenance.
We need to be in the Bible, gaining wisdom, drinking in His commands, emulating Christ. No one and no thing can feed us like the Living Water that Christ provides us through His Word. Without this Living Water in our lives, we are weak spiritually. Our souls grow anemic. Just like our small flying companions, we need Jesus, and Him daily, to survive. May we seek and find, drink and be replenished… again and again and again!
Proverbs 4:20-22 My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Let them not escape from your sight; keep them within your heart. For they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh.
