Beyond the Boredom

We all go through seasons where it feels like God is silent. Or, at the very least, being pretty.darn.quiet. Sometimes this occurs because we’ve moved away from Him… but sometimes it’s because He is simply wanting us to seek Him quietly.

So often we find ourselves wanting to experience the big miracles, the marvelous happenings that we know our God is capable of. We desperately need Him to reach and touch us in a meaningful and visceral way. We plead with Him to move mightily in our lives. We want a big God.

And when we don’t see or feel that enough, we get bored. Faith can be downright boring at times. It’s the truth. The day in and day out of our walks are not so much made up of the mountaintop experiences as they are the daily, step-by-step mundanity of our everyday comings and goings.

We find ourselves bored with our devos, bored with the ministry service we’re involved in, bored with the same prayers. We. want. more. It’s not a bad desire, and I’m not ashamed to raise my hand first to say that I’ve experienced this boredom in my faith. I see these ‘giants of the faith’ that seem to have locked into some supernatural secret club of endless praise and joy and excitement that I apparently didn’t an invite to. Ah the recklessness of comparisons right?!

But there’s more to the monotony of our seemingly mundane faith that meets the eye. Scripture tells us over and over again that God is in the small stuff too. In fact, I think that being such a big God, He RELISHES being small… almost too quiet or tiny to notice. Until you look…. and you listen.

1 Kings 19:11-13 ESV
11 And he said, “Go out and stand on the mount before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper.[a] 13 And when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And behold, there came a voice to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

Dear ones, God is speaking to you today. It may be quiet, virtually undetectable, maybe even a whisper. But He is there, speaking over you, to you, and (hopefully) through you! Catch that again- the CREATOR of the heavens and earth is listening to you, with you, conversing back today. He was yesterday and He will tomorrow. He wants you to hear Him… sometimes He just needs us to quiet our lives down to His level though. There is such richness of intimacy when all is silent.

If you think about it, that’s a pretty phenomenal thing. THAT is a mountaintop sort of experience- better yet, that is what it feels like to have the Shepard guiding and leading us in the valleys, along the paths, back and forth to water, protecting us from predators, and staying by our side as we sleep. What a mundane existence for sheep right?!? Or not at all…

Steady, calm, patient, peaceful… what a treasure we have found in our Great Father! Even in the quiet times.
